Hubby and I just had a wonderful few days in Edinburgh. We managed to cram a lot into the days we had.

I persuaded him to visit the ultimate robber baron's house (Holyroodhouse Palace), and he enjoyed it, I think. The Queen's Gallery, which is showing paintings of the Northern Renaissance that are in the Royal Collection, was particularly impressive. We looked round St Giles which was beautiful, although very un-Presbyterian in its decoration. We also went to Greyfriar's Church, famous as the place where The Covenant was signed, as well as being the place a little Skye Terrier called Bobby visited his Master's grave for 14 years.

We also looked round part of the National Museum of Scotland. It's a fascinating place, huge. It had a really interesting exhibition on Thomas, Lord Cochrane, on whom Hornblower and Jack Aubrey were based. I had never actually heard of him before, other than reading of him in Sharpe's Devil by Bernard Cornwell. Cochrane was a fascinating man, complicated, infuriating, difficult, but brilliant. He managed great feats of battle with barely a man lost on his side.

We ate at a really nice pub called Deacon Brodie. It's named for a man who allegedly inspired the story of Jekyll and Hyde. He was a master craftsman by day, and a burglar by night - indeed he was hanged on the gallows he himself designed.

We also went to the Castle and saw the Scottish Honours ( Crown Jewels) which are really pretty.

There was so much more we could have seen and just simply did not have the time - definitely have to return! We spent a lot of money, but quite a bit of that was on family Christmas presents, which are just perfect!

We did a lot of walking, and while the down bits are not an issue, the up bits (with me being a crock) were a tad harder. So we hopped on a tour bus, and got a really amazing view of Edinburgh, and it saved my legs a little!

We went by train, and got a lovely view of some of the countryside. We paid a little extra when we booked to get a first class ticket on the way home. We were so glad we did, as there was no reservations in standard class, and it looked like standing room only.

Mum and Dad looked after our little beast, and she seems very content.
